Write a Letter, Make a Call

"You must be the change you want to see in the world." --Mahatma Gandhi

From Executive Director Terry Dorsey:

More and more people are asking me what they can do to make the animal Adoption Center happen. I explain to them that this is going to be a long battle.

And while the Commissioner election is almost two years away (more about that later), the time is NOW for you and those you know to write the Commission Chair, Brian Bock, in support of the Adoption Center. Those who spoke at the Capital Development hearing got the Adoption Center on the list of requests for land next to the community college. (This past year the Chatham County Commissioners bought 98 acres next to the community college which would be a ideal location for the Adoption Center).

It seems that Chairman Bock is the most hesitant and he has a big influence of over the other two newly elected officials; Walter Petty and Pam Steward. Commissioners Mike Cross and Sally Kost, have both come out in support of the adoption center, with Sally Kost (pronounced Coast) taking the lead as the most vocal supporter. Sally Kost not only has vision, she has a Master's in Community Development.

I understand that the holidays are a busy time but it may very well be that in the next month the Chatham Commissioners will make a decision about granting GOA 3 to 5 acres next to the Central Carolina Community.

Below are the talking points.

The GOA Board is hoping to have a face to face meeting with the commissioners on December 17 to confront any objections so it is important that they hear from you NOW. I am told that e-mails and petitions are not as effective as a good old fashion letter. Remember that the County Commissioner work for you and they need to know that you are going to make them accountable for what they decide.

Talking Points:

- The Adoption Center was the idea of the County Shelter Staff who are fatigued by euthanizing so many adoptable animals (see the letter from former Shelter Director John Sauls atwww.guardiansofangels.org).

- 80 per cent of the cats and 50 per cent of the dogs are routinely euthanized for lack of space and resources at the county shelter. They have limited resources and capacity but could make a stronger effort at adopting the animals that they do have. Note that the shelter staff is underpaid.

- Remember that GOA uses the term "Adoption Center" not Shelter. We will also have need of a County Shelter to enforce laws, collect strays etc. GOA does not intend to replace the County Shelter. The shelter is our friend, and they do some very important things.

- Euthanizing animals is very hard on the shelter staff and many people will not adopt from a kill- shelter. (GOA avoids the "no -kill label for many reasons but we will do everything possible to adopt animals in qualified homes without a time limit. There will be a wing for senior and handicapped animals who may have to stay for years before they are adopted.

- Tell them that you hold elected officials responsible for killing so many animals in the county. Don't be afraid to speak your mind and strongly, but respectfully state your case.

- An Animal Adoption Center will bring together students, senior citizens and animal lovers to work together to care for animals. Children can come to interact with animals who need the company in order to remain adoptable.

- The Adoption center will be a great opportunity for CCCC Vet Tech students to do their Externships. It is an opportunity for the CCCC to expand it course offerings and draw students to the college.

- An Animal Adoption Center will bring visitors and customers to the County. The business community needs help in order to grow their businesses. If you know a business owner, encourage them to write on their letterhead.

- The County needs to show its conviction by donating or leasing the land for the Animal Adoption Center. Land provided by the county will stimulate fundraising by citizens of the county. GOA will be hiring a capital campaign firm to help us reach our million dollar goal and our spending plan includes two years of operating funds.

- An Animal Adoption Center has a positive effect on the care of pets and animals throughout the county. GOA has already done several Spay Days and two Anti-Dog Fighting classes.

Spend some time on the GOA website: guardiansofangels.org for other ideas and think like a commissioner. What their objection might be. Remember to send you letter with all the commissioners but addressed to Chairman Brian Bock. His address is forthcoming and on the GOA website. Always encourage others to sign up for GOA alerts and the newsletter on the website.

We will be writing letters and Christmas cards to supporters on Tuesday, Dec. 4 - 7 pm at the Pittsboro Roadhouse. Please get involved and recruit others as this is a critical time for GOA and the animals we speak for.

Write your letter (using an envelope and stamp) to Commissioner Brian Bock, and send copies of your letter to the other Commissioners.
